Baseball: Limestone Upsets 10th-Ranked Pacers

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Limestone upset the nationally 10th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team with a 7-3 victory over the Pacers on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Prevatte Field.

USC Aiken (27-8) opened its non-conference loss to Limestone (19-16) by scoring the first run of the game in the top of the third inning.

Limestone would score the next seven runs in the game before the Pacers would score two runs in the top of the seventh.

Ty Barkell (Denver, Colo./Palmer Ridge HS) picked up one of the two runs in the seventh inning for the Pacers when he blasted a solo home run to right field. The home run was Barkell's team-leading eighth of the 2013 season.

Limestone out-hit the Pacers, 8-5, in the game with no Pacer securing multiple hits.

Branden Millhouse (Summerville, S.C./USC Upstate), Bryce Baur (Moncks Corner, S.C./Florence-Darlington Tech), JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood HS) and Sean Miller (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding HS) joined Barkell with one hit each in the game.

Stephen Crowe, Michael Hughey and Kyle Riveria led Limestone in its win over the Pacers with two hits each.

Five different Pacers pitched in the game with starter Adrian Rivero (Alpharetta, Ga./USC Salkehatchie) suffering the loss. He is now 0-1 on the year.

John Cesario (3-1) pitched the first six innings of the game for Limestone to acquire the win.

The Pacers will next close out their week with a Peach Belt Conference three-game series at Roberto Hernandez Stadium against rival Augusta State. The series will begin with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, April 5 at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The three-game league set will conclude with a doubleheader at the ‘Bert on Saturday, April 6.

The first game of the doubleheader is set to get underway at 1 p.m.

USC Aiken and Augusta State have already met once this season with USC Aiken taking a 4-1 10-inning Outback Cup win over the Jaguars on Wednesday, March 27 in Augusta. The Pacers own a 65-20 all-time series lead over Augusta State.
