Sardis, Georgia Police Chief Gary Jones has been named the new Interim Police Chief in Harlem, Georgia, according to an e-mail from Harlem City Manager Jason Rizner.

Jones has more than 25 years of law enforcement experience, including working for both the Richmond County and Columbia County Sheriff's Offices.  Jones was also once the Interim Director of the Augusta Youth Development Campus.

Jones will work part-time until he is no longer the police chief in Sardis, at which point he will be the full-time Police Chief in Harlem, according to Rizner. Rizner also said that Jones is interested in the permanent job of Police Chief.

“The City plans to evaluate the situation going forward and will, at a later date, make decisions regarding a formal application and interview process,” Rizner said in his e-mail.

Tuesday marked Jones' first day with the Harlem Police Department.
