Time Table To Take Down Old Mill

Augusta Commissioners looking for answers when it comes to taking down an abandoned mill downtown.

The old Southern Milling Company building on Twiggs Street has been empty for more than a decade, the walls are caving, in the basement filled with water that smells of chemicals.

The lawyer for the owner of the property told commissioners the building would be taken down in the next six to eight months, and the owner denied there are any hazardous chemicals left over in the water

Edgar Mathews and his attorney Jim Wall hurried down the stairs following the commission meeting, Mathews said there are  “absolutely no chemicals” in the building, and agreed the building is an eyesore for the neighborhood.

Commissioners voted Tuesday  to have the city License and Inspections department monitor the progress of the demolition of the mill and make reports back to city leaders on a -monthly- basis.
