A man has been arrested in connection to an attempted robbery at an Aiken County package store.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene of an attempted armed robbery at the A+ Package Store on Whiskey Road on Monday that happened around 6:27 p.m.

Witnesses at the scene described the suspect as a black male wearing a white tank top and blue jeans. The suspect reportedly gave the impression that he had a weapon, demanded money, and fled the scene on foot.

Deputies and assisting law enforcement agencies responded to the area where a manhunt ensued. The Aiken County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call from another victim of a strong arm robbery on Valley Drive, describing the same suspect from the A+ Package Store.

The suspect, 35-year-old Ray Charles Smalls, Jr. was captured shortly by the perimeter units on Dry Branch Road. He was arrested and taken to the Aiken County Detention Center and expected to be charged with Strong Arm Robbery.

Assisting law enforcement agencies were New Ellenton Police Department, South Carolina Highway Patrol, Aiken Department of Public Safety, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
