Pacers Advance to Match Play, Atkins Nearly Wins Individual Title

HERSHEY, Pa. – The nationally fifth-ranked University of
South Carolina Aiken men's golf team finished tied for fourth as a team after
the final round of stroke play at the 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Golf
Championship at the par-71, 6,984-yard East Course at the Hershey Country Club.

With the tie for fourth, USC Aiken advances to the
national quarterfinals for the second straight year.

USC Aiken (298-292-298) and seventh-ranked Lynn
(290-301-297) both finished tied for fourth at 888.

The two teams will now meet in the national quarterfinals
on Thursday, May 23. The two teams will start their match play quarterfinal at
7:30 a.m. on Thursday on hole No. 10.

The match will consist of five points with one point
being awarded for each individual match.

National No. 8 Florida Southern claimed the top seed
entering match play with a three-round team score of 867 (294-293-280). The
Mocs will face off against eighth-seeded Western Washington in the
quarterfinals.

The winner of the USC Aiken-Lynn match will face the
winner of the Florida Southern-Western Washington match in the semifinal round
at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.

In the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Barry
will take on seventh-seeded Missouri St. Louis, while third-seeded Nova
Southeastern will take on sixth-seeded CSU-Monterey Bay. The winner of the two
quarterfinals on that side of the bracket will then move on to the semifinal
round at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.

The national championship match is scheduled to begin at
10 a.m. on Friday, May 24.

USC Aiken was led in stroke play at the 2013 NCAA
Division II Men's Golf Championship by Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year
Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State).

 

Atkins (70-69-72) finished the three rounds of stroke
play tied with Florida Southern's Tim Crouch (71-71-69) and Western
Washington's Jake Webb (71-75-65).

 

The trio went to a playoff, but Atkins bowed out on the
first playoff hole. Crouch would go on to claim individual medalist honors on
the second playoff hole.

 

All five of USC Aiken's players in the 2013 NCAA Division
II Men's Golf Championship finished in the top-65 with Taylor Welborn
(LaGrange, Ga./Darton) tying for 37th at 226 (76-76-74) and Hayden Letien
(Sumter, S.C./Sumter HS) tying for 41st at 227 (76-71-80).

 

USC Aiken's JP Solis (Morelia, Mexico/Lico Morelia) tied
for 59th at 230 (76-80-74), while Mark Dickson (Edinburgh, Scotland/Firrhill)
tied for 64th at 231 (77-76-78).
