Two Local Middle Schooler’s Compete in National Scripps Spelling Bee

Two local students will complete with nearly 300 kids at the Scripps National Spelling Bee this week.

14-year-old Rachel Cundey from Lakeside Middle and 14-year-old DeAria Phoenix from Allendale-Fairfax Middle will put their spelling skills to the test.

Preliminaries start Tuesday, and the finals are on Thursday.

All spellers are between 8 and 14 years old.

Some of the spellers' favorite words include conquistador, flibbertigibbet, humuhumunukunukuapuaa, physiognomy, weissnichtwo and gobbledegook.
