Augusta's recycling program is getting a boost these days.
City workers are busy delivering recycle bins to customers.
With trash pickup dropping to one day a week starting Monday, recycling officials say they've seen a big jump in the number of requests.
Only about one in four customers recycles now, but that number is growing fast.
“We have had great response, we have had 250 new customers in the past thirty days request recycling bins, so that is what we want. We want people to try and recycle. It's very easy to do,” says Augusta Landfill deputy director Lori Videtto. “Two [hundred] fifty in the last 30 days? Is that normal?” we asked. “That's way up, we typically have 10 to 15 a month,” Videtto answered.
Customers are encouraged to check out the top of their carts to find out the do's and dont's when it comes to recycling. Landfill officials say the best rule of thumb is, if you can rinse it, you can recycle it, except for glass.
