A new unit is ready to go to work for the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
Ten new reserve deputies were sworn in Thursday morning during a special ceremony at the Augusta Judicial Center.
The deputies will not be paid and you can expect to see many of them patrolling the downtown area.
The creation of this special team has been in the works for two years now.
“You know, they have full arrest power, they carry weapons, they do all the same functions as our other law enforcement officers and deputies on the streets, but they're volunteering their services at least a minimum of 20 hours a month,” says Lieutenant Lewis Blanchard, of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
Similar deputy reserve programs have already been in place for years in Columbia County and Aiken County.
