Augusta, GA (WJBF) — The ThunderStix were the latest team to take advantage of the GreenJackets “Baseball Buddies” program Wednesday night. The program allows local youth teams to run out onto the field at Lake Olmstead Stadium with the players prior to a GreenJackets game. The ThunderStix 12 & Under team from Augusta got to experience that fun, and they seem to be very deserving of getting that chance.
Started 2 and a half years ago by Patrick C. Davis and Justin Bolin (who now coach the team), the Thunderstix was originally a team made up of underprivileged kids and those who didn't have anywhere else to play. But this traveling youth baseball team has quickly grown into something much more than that. They welcome anyone and everyone and are now a team made up of players from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
This team has also done quite a bit of winning. They have been nationally ranked by the USSSA Baseball association. They travel around the southeast to play in tournaments including a recent trip to Myrtle Beach.
But as much as the coaches value winning, they value molding these kids into good people even more. Coach Davis says the goal is to make sure every one of their players go to college.
