An 11 year veteran of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office was fired Tuesday after an investigation into a complaint of missing evidence.

Wade Smith had been a deputy since 2002.  Investigators said Smith confiscated some marijuana, money and a handgun during an arrest on November 2, 2012, but did not document that evidence or recover the property correctly.

Smith allegedly told investigators the drugs were destroyed, the weapon was discarded and the money was given to a family member of the defendant.  But investigators said an internal investigation found no evidence to support those claims.

The Sheriff's Office investigation is ongoing.  Once it is finished, the investigation will be in the hands of the District Attorney's office.
