MEMPHIS, Tenn. — South Carolina rising sophomore and North Augusta native Matt
NeSmith carded a 3-over 73 in the first round of the PGA Tour's FedEx St. Jude
Classic on Thursday at TPC Southwind.
NeSmith wrapped up the day in a tie for 116th and is
seven shots back of a group of six golfers who share the lead at 4-under.
A native of North Augusta, S.C., NeSmith began his round
on No. 10 and got off to a shaky start with bogeys on two of his first four
holes before bouncing back with birdies on No. 14 and 16 to get back to even
par. However, back-to-back bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes left him at 2-over
par at the turn. He was able to get to 1-over with a birdie on No. 3 but played
the final six hole at 2-over to get into the clubhouse with a 73.
NeSmith will attempt to make the cut on Friday in the
second round as he is slated to tee off at 1:48 p.m. CDT. Live scoring will be
