Augusta, GA (WJBF) — Dip Metress tones it down a bit this week as he deals with youngsters instead of his normal college basketball team. The annual Dip Metress Basketball Academy is running all week long at Christenberry Fieldhouse. It's really for kids of all ages, boys and girls from grades 1 thru 11. Coach Metress says he hopes the kids learn fundamentals, have fun, and get exposed to the GRU-Augusta men's basketball program.
Yes, the Augusta State Jaguars are no more after the name change became official at the end of the spring sports season. It's a fitting time for change for the men's basketball team as they hope to turn the page after a rough 2012-2013 season.
Center Chad July was kicked off the team for conduct detrimental to the team, and forward Harold Doby was suspended indefinitely after a loaded gun was discovered in his University Village apartment. Without their 2 key players, the Jaguars struggled to their lowest win total (14) in Mattress' 9 years as head coach.
On Tuesday, Coach Metress sounded confident the group he has coming back can turn things around and compete for a conference championship. He also signed a couple of recruits, and a pair of red shirt freshman will join a returning group of “high character” guys according to Metress.
Metress also said last year's off the court issues will not change the way he recruits or the kinds of players he goes after calling them isolated incidents while saying the program hasn't missed a beat in 9 years.
