AUGUSTA, GA – For 25 years the name Pete Igel has been linked with club swimming in the CSRA. A tireless advocate of the sport, Igel passed away early last year at the age of 71 – but the tournament he started lives on thanks to his family and former team.
The annual Springlakes relay event was held on Saturday morning with a new name – the Pete Igel Annual Relay Meet. Members of Igel's family were on hand to accept a plaque dedicating the tournament to Pete and honoring his dedication to the CSRA swimming community.
“I remember being seven and he was calling the meets,” Pete's daughter Petra Lynch said. “To see this and to see (the Springlake team) honor him? It's just a great day.”
