AUGUSTA, GA (WJBF) – The world's richest drag boat race is no match for mother nature this year. The 2013 Augusta Southern Nationals scheduled for July
19-21 have been canceled due to the current conditions of the Savannah
River.

According to Savannah Riverkeeper Tonya Bonitatibus the average flow
of the river where the races take place is 6,000 – 7,000 cfs. Currently
the river is running at 29,000 cfs and it will increase to 37,000 cfs by
Thursday morning.

The Army Corps of Engineers says the river will remain at that level
for the next two to three weeks and due to the reservoirs upstream being
well above pool they can't do anything about lowering the discharge in
the river.

Bonitatibus also said there is a dangerous amount of debris floating
in the river at this time and that would create unsafe conditions for
the racers.

Compounding the issue is the current path of tropical storm Chantal to move up the river.

If you purchased tickets to the event, you can get a full refund. Check out the Southern Nationals website fore more information.
