It's been nearly a year since Harlem got a brand new Public Safety building. SPLOST funds helped pay for the $1.2 million renovation.

The new building has a training room, a new courtroom, and a facility to check police records.

Chief Gary Jones has been on the job for about 4 months now and says the biggest problem in Harlem is theft.

Jones believes in the community policing model. The city is also using a new tag recognition reader to crack down on drug and sex trafficking on the I-20 corridor. “It reads licenses plate as they go by and checks with a national database. It checks to see if the car was stolen, out of registration, out of insurance, driver licenses…” he says.

Just last week, all officers received body armor through a grant-funded program. All officers also carry TASERs.
