Augusta, GA — The GRU Augusta Women's
Basketball program survived a last minute comeback from the West Georgia Wolves
to take a 66-63 non-conference contest in Christenberry Fieldhouse Tuesday
GRU (3-3) junior Whitney
Rohrbach won the opening tip and drove the lane to put the Jags on the board
first. The Wolves (1-4) went ahead on a three-point shot from Shakiyla McLin,
but later GRU senior Dericka Griffis completed a three-point play to keep the
Jags ahead in the thirteenth minute of the opening half. Jemimah Ashby was
tired of the one-basket affair and pushed GRU's lead to seven with a left-side
jumper. Ashby blocked the next Wolves' shot attempt, resulting in a Becky
Newhouse fast-break layup.
The Jags stretched their
first-half lead to 15 at 4:21 when Ashby, who led the Jags with 10 points in
the first half, sunk a jumper. The Wolves banked in a three with under a minute
to bring the game within 10 for a 35-25 score at the break. GRU hit 14-of-16
free throws in the first half and shot 41.7 percent from the floor to UWG's
GRU let the Wolves have an
8-0 run out of the break for a 35-33 affair and remained scoreless for the
first four minutes of the second half. Senior Brooke McCants hit a jumper and
Rohrbach hit a left-hand layup to end the UWG streak. Taylor Turgeon and Marion
Lemonnier hit back-to-back treys to keep the Wolves in a one-possession game
with 11:20 to go. UWG's 6-1 post Seandre Lee showed her skills outside the
paint – evening the game at 48-all with a deep ball at the top of the key.
Lee caught a pass down low
and hit a layup to give UWG their first lead of the second half, but Ashby
found junior Kelsey Fynaardt in the paint twice to stay on top 61-55. Lemonnier
hit another Wolves three, but the Jags got to the line and held off the late
rally for the victory. Ashby scored a team-high 16 points for GRU and Griffis
added 10 and Newhouse 11 with 11 rebounds. McLin led all scorers with 18
points, while Turgeon added 13 and Lee 11. The Jags shot 39.6 from the floor
and a dominating 83.3 from the charity stripe.
