Beside every good man is a great woman. In this Black History Moment, we are highlighting Coretta Scott King. Mrs. King is not only the wife of Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr., but she is also an activist and civil rights leader in her own right.

King helped lead the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s, and after her husband’s death, she took on the leadership of the struggle for racial equality along with equal rights for women and the LGBT community. King founded the King Center and was responsible for making Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday a national holiday.

Coretta Scott King died on January of 2006, and she was the first African-American to lie in the Georgia State capitol upon her death. And just like her husband, Coretta Scott King’s legacy continues to live on in all of us.

Remember, Black History is America’s history.
