GreenJackets Wrap Up Homestand with a Win

Augusta, GA–The Augusta GreenJackets (52-55) defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers (68-41) on Tuesday night, at Lake Olmstead Stadium, 8-5. Sam Mende, a recent addition to the GreenJackets, finished the night three for four at bat with two RBI and sits with a batting average of .400.

The GreenJackets struck early with three runs scored in the first two innings. Tyler Horan drove in the first run in the first inning with a single to left-center field. In the second inning, Sam Mende scored on a ground out and Craig Massoni scored on a fielding error by Grasshoppers’ Felix Munoz. 

It took until the sixth inning for Greensboro to get on the board. They scored one run in the sixth. Joel Jiminez drove in the run with a single to left-center field. The GreenJackets quickly replied with two more runs scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sam Mende drove in the first run with a single to right field. A sacrifice fly scored the second run for Augusta. After six innings, Augusta led Greensboro 5-1.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the GreenJackets scored three more runs. Sam Mende drove in the first run with a double to right field. A sacrifice fly, by Gabriel Cornier, drove in the second run and Sam Mende plated the final run on a forced ground out. 

With the intent to rally that fell short, Greensboro scored four runs in the ninth inning. Yeffri Perez drove in the first run with a single to left field. Carlos Lopez hit a three run home run to right field on a 3-2 pitch. The home run is Lopez’s fifth of the season. 

GreenJackets’s starting pitcher, Joan Gregorio (2-3), earned the win Tuesday night. In six innings pitched, Gregorio allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out six batters. Grasshopper’s starting pitcher, Jose Adames (1-1) took the loss. In five and two-thirds inning pitched, Adames gave up seven hits, one earned run, and only struck out two batters.  

The GreenJackets head to Kannapolis for a four game series and then Greenville for a three game series. The team returns home on August 7th for a four game series against the Savannah Sand Gnats. Great seats are still available by logging onto Catch the Buzz!
