Five months into her pregnancy, Christine Perez and her husband, Miguel, received devastating news. “It was a race between what was going to grow the fastest. Either the cancer or the baby,” said Christine Perez. “We were told that the best thing to do was to terminate the pregnancy,” said Christine’s husband, Miguel.
With Christine’s cervical cancer in danger of touching the womb, the Perez’s decided to have doctors deliver the baby only 20 week into the pregnancy. “What the experts told us, we put all of our faith in god and this is what happens, said Miguel.” “He weighed 3-point-8 pounds when he was born. I believe it’s a miracle,” said Christine.
That miracle is named Xavier and he’s now 4 years old. His golf obsession began when he was 10 months old. “The minute he got out of that bouncer and took his first step, he went straight to a golf iron and started acting like he was swinging it,” said Miguel.
This Xavier kid is pretty good…just ask him. “They say I’m the best golfer in the world”, said 4-year old Xavier Perez. When Xavier competes in tournaments, it’s always against kids who are two or three years older and he usually wins. “I’ve got 7, and I want over 100 trophies,” said Xavier.
For Miguel and Christine, every second with Xavier is cherished. 4 years ago, moments on the golf course with their son were never promised, but they never gave up hope.
“It was some divine intervention,” said Xavier’s father. “We stuck to our faith and we stuck to our beliefs.”
“We couldn’t imagine what it would be like if we didn’t have him,” said Christine.
