Scholar Athlete: Barnwell’s Shelby Hooper

Sports can be a therapeutic way to escape the stresses of daily life. Barnwell’s Shelby Hooper takes that concept to heart, saying soccer is her favorite stress reliever.

Hooper is this week’s WJBF Scholar Athlete recipient. She began playing soccer when she was just four years old, and today, is a team captain for Barnwell. She’s also a youth group leader at her local church, a National Honor Society member and involved in Beta Club. What’s been her biggest hurdle through it all, though?
“Probably pleasing my parents,” Hooper laughed. “They have really high expectations, so I just feel like I have to do my best to please them.”
“I was a dad that was strict, especially on education,” Shelby’s father, Travis Hooper, said. “I told her that sports wouldn’t last forever but that education would, so it’s important. And I played around in school, so I knew how to teach her not to play around,” he joked.
Hooper will attend USC Upstate to study nursing in the fall..
Congratulations to Barnwell’s Shelby Hooper, this week’s WJBF Scholar Athlete recipient.
