MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The GRU Augusta Jaguars advanced past the Young Harris Mountain Lions with a 3-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Milledgeville, Ga., on Friday night.
Hosted by Georgia College, the 22nd-annual PBC Softball Championship kicked off Thursday, April 23 at a banquet with GRU’s Paige Deschaine, Brooke Stephens, Molly Walton, and Hannah Wilson all winning All-Conference accolades.
Earning the fourth seed into the tournament, the Jaguars took an early lead and produced enough offense to get the win behind Paige Deschaine on the mound.
Senior Stephens and sophomore Hannah Wilson each went 2-3 to anchor the Jaguars in the game-one win of the tourney. The Jaguars will meet first-seeded North Georgia in the semifinals on Saturday, April 25 at 11:00 a.m. In the regular season, UNG swept GRU at home on March 26 (L, 2-0; L, 9-3).
GRU’s Hannah Wilson singled in the bottom of the second and Brianna Dickens slapped a single to left field that snuck by the outfielder to allow Wilson to score an unearned run for a 1-0 Jaguar lead. In the fourth inning, senior Brooke Stephens hit an opposite-field homer halfway up the right-field net for her 10th long ball of the season.
Dickens drove in Wilson again for another unearned run later in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field for a 3-0 advantage.
Deschaine (16-1) went all seven innings in the shut-out win, striking out five and giving up eight hits for no runs allowed. Stephens went 2-3 with a scored run and RBI on her homer and Wilsn was 2-3 with two scored runs on the day.
YHC outhit the Jags 8-5, but GRU capitalized on two Mountain Lions errors and Deschaine stranded 12 runners on the base path.
