Another call is being made to ban portable basketball goals on the streets of Augusta.

Monday, we talked to Hillwood Neighborhood Association member Vivian Rosier, who went before Augusta Commissioners to say the portable goals create a safety issue for children playing in the streets as well as creating a neighborhood nuisance with increased noise.

Banning Basketball Goals Goes Back Before Augusta Commissioners

Last month, Commissioners rejected a proposal from Commissioner Sammie Sias to ban the goals, but Sias says it still needs to be considered.

“We’re not talking about taking goals out of neighborhoods. We’re talking about putting them in yards or putting them in parks, not in the street. We don’t encourage our kids to set up a basketball court on Deans Bridge Road or Highway 520. We shouldn’t encourage them to do it in the neighborhoods, it’s a nuisance,” said Sias.

Commissioners took no action on the basketball goal ban at Tuesday’s meeting, but Sias says he plans to bring it back up at a later time.
