The AAA GISA soccer championships at Blanchard Woods Park on Saturday featured two local teams winning back-to-back titles.
The first half of the boys game was scoreless, but Westminster scored three second half goals to beat Deerfield-Windsor 3-0.
“Last year we were able to win a championship as a very young team, and so we had high standards this year,” Westminster coach Mike Freace said. “But more than anything these guys have just worked really hard all year and just played hard as a team all year long, and I think they’ve got a just reward.”
Before the boys championship, the Augusta Prep girls defended their title against Westminster. The Wildcats couldn’t complete the sweep Saturday, though. Augusta Prep led 2-0 at halftime en route to a 4-1 championship victory.
In addition to Westminster and Augusta Prep, the Alleluia boys soccer team defeated Sherwood Saturday afternoon in penalty kicks to win the GICAA state title.
