It’s the calm before the Storm Water Utility Fee.
An Augusta Commission committee is again taking up the fee to maintain and upgrade the storm water system.
Ninety percent of Augusta homeowners would pay $6.40 per month. Churches and businesses would pay more.
Some city leaders are pushing for a 30 percent cut to ease the burden, which is an idea other Commissioners do not support.
“The only way I will support the storm water fee is if it is $6.40 a month. We made a mistake when we increased taxes. We didn’t go up enough on the millage rate because we couldn’t show the people we were sincere in what we are doing. The consultants, the engineers have all said that $6.40 a month will get us up to a B+ rating,” says Commissioner Bill Lockett.
The Engineering Services Committee voted to send the issue ahead to the full Commission without a recommendation in favor, nor against.
