Aiken, SC – Mental health can be taboo, but hundreds of people in the CSRA opened their mouths to help people fight the illness.

Downtown Aiken was hot and steamy with an event that was too sweet to miss.  Mental Health America Aiken County held its 16th Annual Aiken’s Cookin’ with Celebrity Chefs fundraiser.  Foods were prepared by 21 local cooks, including luscious lemon pound cake baked by News Channel 6’s Jennie Montgomery.

“It’s just a few ingredients.  It’s your basic eggs and butter and flour,” Montgomery said.

The event raises around 30 thousand dollars to help fund programs that promote positive mental health in Aiken County.

Mental Health America Aiken County Executive Director Lisa Tindal added, “The goals of our programs are to try to shed a positive light on people in crisis whether that crisis be suicide or ideation or helping a loved one who may have lost a friend or loved one to suicide.”

“My mother was a mental health professional.  She worked for the Department of Mental Health in South Carolina for many years,” Montgomery added.  “Aiken was, in fact, one of her regions.  So, some of the people who are here remember my mother from years ago.  She’s been retired a long time.  But, I grew up in a family where I had a mental health professional and I have a brother who is a psychiatrist so I think it has always been important to our family.”

As for what makes Jennie Montgomery’s pound cakes so luscious, she said, “I think the secret ingredient is the love I put into it.”

More than 200 people attended the event.
