Aiken, SC (WJBF) — 10 years after winning the Palmetto Amateur by shooting 59 on the final round, Aiken’s Dane Burkhart made his return to the tournament.
The 30-year-old golfer made a successful return to amateur golf, and although he did not repeat his 2005 performance, Burkhart still took home a trophy.
“[I’m the] Mid-Am Champion, so I’m the best old guy,” Burkhart laughed. “Didn’t know that was going to be part of the show this year, but it was nice to be the Mid-Am Champion.”
If he had not shot a 40 on his first nine back on Wednesday, Burkhart certainly could have been hoisting the first-place trophy once again.
After winning national championships from 2004-06 at USC Aiken with now PGA Tour pro Scott Brown, Burkhart played on several professional mini tours until 2011, when he decided to stop playing professionally. Burkhart earned his amateur status back last week and plans to play in the South Carolina Mid-Am Four-Ball in August.
