Former Westside Patriot and Georgia Bulldog Sanders Commings is a cousin of one of the victims in the Charleston church shooting. Commings, who now plays defensive back for the Kansas City Chiefs, tweeted out his condolences Thursday morning.
The Kansas City Star confirmed with the Chiefs that Commings and Pastor Clementa Pinckney were blood relatives.
Commings was present at the final day of the Chiefs’ offseason program Thursday according to the Star, but he was not available for comment. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid speaking about Commings said, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sanders Commings and his family. He’s doing OK, as expected. That’s a pretty big shock. That’s all I can probably say to you.”
Commings attended Westside High School in Augusta from 2004-2007 before going to the University of Georgia.
