Augusta, GA — Mercer head football coach Bobby Lamb is familiar recruiting the CSRA.
“I’ve always recruited this area very well — all the way back when I was at Furman,” Lamb said Thursday at an Augusta Exchange Club meeting, where he was a guest speaker. “There’s quality athletes, quality student athletes in this area.”
Mercer football enters its third year back on campus, following a 72-year hiatus without football. The Bears will have 53 players on athletic scholarships this season, 15 more than last year. The increase in scholarship funds helps Lamb remain competitive in recruiting, which was evident in the three CSRA players he brought on board.
“[Lakeside’s] Stephen Houzah, we feel like he’s going to be a major player for us early in our program,” Lamb said of the former Panthers’ star wideout and defensive back. “[Thomson’s] Jake Brooks will come in and add to the depth of our defensive line. And then Will Coneway. Wow, what a career he had at Washington County.”
Those three players and the rest of the freshman class reports to Mercer this Sunday. Lamb says they’ll each take two summer classes and work with conditioning coaches until fall camp begins August 4th.
