Augusta- GA – The Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta treated several patients for fireworks-related injuries during the long Fourth of July weekend.

In all, 21 patients were treated for injuries involving fireworks.

“Because we are a regional burn center, we know we will receive a number of fireworks burns each holiday from across the Southeast,” said Beretta Craft-Coffman, a nurse practitioner with Joseph M. Still Burn Centers, Inc. “This was a typical year for the burn center in terms of numbers of fireworks injuries, especially since it was a long holiday weekend with decent weather.”

Craft-Coffman said the kind of injuries were also similar to past years. “The injuries ranged from minor flash burns to severe, deeper burns caused by larger fireworks,” she said. “Many of the burns we treated were caused by smaller, hand-held fireworks.” She said many of the burns can be traced back to one thing: carelessness.

“It happens all the time: folks are out having fun and someone lets their guard down for just a second,” she said. “That is all it takes. That is also one of the reasons it is so important to designate someone as the ‘shooter.’ That person can then pay attention to safely lighting the fireworks.”
