Augusta, GA – The Savannah River is getting ready to roar. This weekend marks the return of the Augusta Southern Nationals drag boat races.

The event started in 1986 and has grown into one of the premier attractions in the area. It takes a lot of work but the fast boats have been a big hit drawing in the fans to the river.

“We like to see them here because it gives us a chance to show off Augusta also when they leave we’re over a million dollars better off the community that is in terms of their spending while they’re here so it’s just a great event,” says Dayton Sherrouse, Chairman of the Augusta Southern Nationals.

The weekend kicks off with testing on the river Friday followed by  the Night of Fire at the Augusta Common with the boats firing up at dark
