Augusta, GA. — 2013 Lakeside grad Emmanuel Kountakis will be playing college golf in Augusta the next couple seasons. The 2014 Palmetto Amateur champion is transferring from Mercer to the GRU men’s golf program.
“I wanted to come back home,” Kountakis said Sunday following a fourth place finish in the Augusta City Amateur at Forest Hills Golf Club. “[I] felt like playing for the hometown team; felt like it was a good idea. They have a great facility, so it can only go uphill from here.”
Kountakis primarily played at West Lake Country Club in high school, but he also has plenty of experience at GRU’s home course, Forest Hills.
“It’s fun to play this course,” he said. “I played a good bit of high school matches out here and some other junior events when I was growing up, so I’ve been out here quite a few times.”
Mercer already granted Kountakis his release from the program, so he can begin playing immediately with the Jaguars this fall.
