Augusta, GA – A “Do Not Swim” order has been lifted for a portion of the Savannah River after an oily substance was seen floating on the surface.

According to the Augusta Utilities Department, the source is somewhere between 15th Street and the historic Harrisburg neighborhood area. Officials believe the leak has been stopped.

Crews spent Thursday flushing away the substance by pumping in water from the Augusta Canal. A boom is still on the river in the area of the leak.

The majority of Augusta-Richmond County’s drinking water is pumped from the Savannah River.
