Suspects Arrested In Connection To Deadly Shooting On Barnes Road

Augusta, GA – Three suspects have been arrested in connection to a deadly shooting that happen Wednesday on Barnes Road, in Richmond County.

Wednesday, around 5:30 p.m., Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 1925 Kratha Drive in reference to a shooting.

The caller advised that men were forcing another person into a vehicle.

Upon deputies’ arrival, they realized the address given by the caller was to Wilkinson Gardens Elementary School and everything was okay at the school. Deputies the began riding in the surrounding neighborhood and were able to determine a shooting occurred in front of 1971 Barnes Road.

A short time later, 34-year-old Carlton Deon Nipple was brought in by a personal vehicle to the Georgia Regents Medical Center (GRMC) Emergency Department with a gunshot wound. He died a short time later, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Investigators began looking into this incident and were able to determine that 34-year-old Carlton Deon Nipple and Sidney Carter III had been involved in a dispute regarding a mother both had children with.

A short time prior to the incident, the spokesperson tells us 24-year-old Marcellus L. Nipple and 21-year-old Brandon L. Jackson purchased the firearm that was possessed later by Carlton Nipple and later fired by Marcellus Nipple.

Carlton Nipple reportedly showed up shortly after 3:00 p.m. to Sidney Carter’s residence with Marcellus L. Nipple, 26-year-old Antonio B. Rivers Jackson. They were reportedly armed with a handgun and wanting to fight with Carter.

During an argument, Carlton Nipple reportedly displayed a handgun and was shot by Carter. After the shooting, Carter reportedly fled on foot and was chased by Marcellus Nipple, who began shooting at Carter.

Marcellus Nipple, Jackson, and Rivers then reportedly placed Carlton Nipple into their vehicle and transported him to GRMC for medical treatment. After dropping Carlton Nipple, Marcellus Nipple, and Jackson off at GRMC, Rivers reportedly left the area and disposed of the handgun and vehicle before being located on East Boundary.

At this time, the following individuals have been arrested in connection with Carlton Nipple’s death:

Marcellus L Nipple, of the 2100 block of Pepperidge Drive, is charged with Aggravated Assault, Felony Murder, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
Antonio B. Rivers, of the 700 block of Chapman Street East, is charged with Aggravated Assault and Felony Murder.
Brandon L. Jackson, of the 2100 block of Pepperidge Drive, is charged with Aggravated Assault and Felony Murder.

Initially, investigators held Carter, pending the completion of the investigation. They have since ruled that Carter acted in self-defense and no charges will be brought against him, at this time.
