New Information Released Concerning Gloverville Suspect, Standoff

Aiken County, SC – The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has released new information concerning the search for a suspect in Gloverville and subsequent standoff that happened Wednesday morning.

Sergeant Jason Feemster tells us, around 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Sheriff’s Office received a call about a suspicious person riding a bicycle near Carolina Street and Bay Street in Gloverville, South Carolina.

The caller said and the person was wearing a camouflage jacket, grey pants, and something black on the side of his body.

Deputies responded and while they attempted to locate the suspect, the Sheriff’s Office received two complaints around 6:00 a.m. of vehicles being broken into on Pine Log Road, in Warrenville.

A shotgun and a handgun were stolen from the two locations, according to Sgt. Feemster.

One of the homes home surveillance system which recorded video of the suspect. The suspect was described as being a white male wearing a camouflage jacket.

Deputies set up a perimeter and the Aiken County Bloodhound Tracking Team responded. While the perimeter was established, a white male matching the description of the suspect came into the perimeter. Deputies attempted to identify the suspect before he reportedly fled from deputies and ran to a friend’s home on Turnbull Street, in Gloverville.

During this time, Gloverville Elementary School was placed on a soft lockdown.

Deputies then made contact with people inside the apartment who said the suspect was hiding in the attic.

Sgt. Femmster said, “in an abundance of caution, the SWAT Team was requested to assist in making contact with the suspect. The suspect exited the house after negotiators called him out of the apartment.”

Investigators took the suspect and the tenants to the Sheriff’s Office to be interviewed. The suspect told investigators that he ran from deputies because he thought he had a warrant for trespassing. After interviewing all parties it could not be determined if this suspect was involved in the vehicle break-ins.

No one was injured during the investigation, which is ongoing.

Gloverville, SC – A suspect in a string of car break-ins in Aiken County is now in custody after locking himself inside a home on Turnbull Street in Gloverville, S.C.

It was around 9:30 a.m. when police apprehended the suspect, whose name has not yet been released.

While police investigated the incident, nearby Gloverville Elementary was on soft lockdown – meaning students and teachers continued school as usual while remaining inside their classrooms with all windows and doors locked.

In light of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office asks car owns to be vigilant to lock their car doors, especially when there are firearms inside.

Gloverville, SC – We have learned that the soft lockdown at Gloverville Elementary School has now been lifted.

Aiken County Public School District spokesperson Mary Glenne Piccolino released the following statement a few moments ago:

The lockdown status at Gloverville Elementary School has been lifted.

The sheriff’s department has confirmed that the suspect has been apprehended.

During the soft lockdown, students, teachers and staff continued classroom instruction as usual, while remaining in their classrooms with all windows, exterior and interior doors locked.

The school’s Principal Michelle Padgett is updating parents/guardians via a Blackboard Connect (robo call message) at this time.

Thank you to Gloverville families for their continued trust in the school as we continue to provide a safe environment for all students.

Gloverville, SC – We have learned that a standoff that was going on in Gloverville is now over.

SWAT team members have now taken the man into custody without incident. His identitiy has not been released, at this time.

Officials say his family and his girlfriend were in contact with him and convinced him to give up.

Gloverville, SC – We have more information on the search for a presumably armed man in Gloverville, South Carolina that has also caused Gloverville Elementary School to be placed on a soft lock down.

The suspect is being sought in connection to several vehicle break-ins and officials tell us he may have stolen a gun out of a vehicle and his is thought to be armed.

Multiple agencies and law enforcement personnel have converged on Turnbull Street and SWAT team members are trying to talk him out of a house there. There is no hostage is involved in the standoff.

We have crews near the scene and we will provide more information as it becomes available.

Aiken County, SC – WJBF News Channel 6 has learned that Gloverville Elementary School in Gloverville, South Carolina is on a soft lock down. The school is located at 114 Gloria Rush Circle.

Aiken County law enforcement officials tell WJBF News Channel 6 that a suspect in multiple car break-ins was spotted on Carolina Street, off Myrtle Street, at 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. This suspect allegedly stole a gun from a vehicle, so officials are considering him armed.

The suspect is described as being a white male wearing a camouflage hat, gray shorts, and a black jacket.

A perimeter has been set up around the area where the school is located for precautionary measures. The Aiken County Bloodhound Tracking Team is being used to track the suspect. Also, additional officers and equipment and vehicles are being brought in to aid in the situation.

The Aiken County Public School District released the following statement on the situation:

Gloverville Elementary School was placed on a soft lock down this morning when local law enforcement notified our District that a search was underway in the area. The school campus has been secured and students and staff are safe.

Students, teachers and staff are continuing classroom instruction as usual, but will remain in their classrooms with all windows, exterior and interior doors locked. Parents were notified via Blackboard Connect and will be updated immediately as updates to this status are available.

We have crews on the scene and we will provide more information as it becomes available.
