Denmark, SC – How did I almost miss this? The Air Guitar World Championships are going to rock Finland. You know, Finland is easy to get to…all you have to do is take a left at Denmark, South Carolina.
Yes, it’s going on in Finland. The Air Guitar World Championships is where the participant pretends to play an imaginary electric guitar…sort of like modern dance.
That’s sounds like fun for Finland, but we have a problem.
“Not the right Finland, not the right place, no,” said Dave Garrick, of nearby Norway, South Carolina.
At Trader Jac’s in Finland, South Carolina, owner Sherry Cody may not be world championship caliber, but she’s no stranger to air guitar. “I get behind the bar with a little broom and I get them going. Before you know it, all the rest of them are jumping in and having fun,” she said.
Dave Garrick is a professional guitar player. He says, if others want to air guitar, why not? “It’s something people can do. Feel the music and show their expression. You can’t play a real guitar, everybody can play an air guitar,” said Garrick.
And, here in Finland, they’re just crazy enough to try it, too.
Sherry gave it a whirl as she played air guitar to the sounds of “Crazy Train”, by Ozzy Osbourne.
In Finland the best in the world are competing on air guitar, but down home in Finland, South Carolina the not so great are free to try.
I laid down some licks on “Freebird”, by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
It all happened in Finland, South Carolina…not the other one over there in Scandinavia.
