Body found by hunter in Burke County identified

We now know the name of victim whose body was found last Friday in Burke County.

An autopsy determined the body was 27-year-old Michael Jones of Augusta.

A hunter found the body last Friday in the woods near Watkins Pond Road.

Investigators are still looking for clues to determine a motive and a suspect.

BURKE COUNTY- Authorities confirm that a hunter came across a body Friday around 6:35 p.m.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to help assist in the investigation.

The body was found around Watkins Pond Road, in Burke County.

The GBI confirms the body found is a middle aged white male. There is no identity yet.

Sources say the hunter was walking along a railroad track when he saw what he thought was a dead deer. The body was found about 30 feet from the railroad tracks off of highway 56 north.

A spokesperson with the GBI says the body had been in the wooded area for at least a couple of days.

The Body has been sent to the crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.
