TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WSAV) – Officials say at least 5 people drowned or nearly drowned after an incident on Tybee Island Sunday evening.
One person is still missing and the U.S. Coast Guard and Tybee Ocean Rescue teams are actively searching for them on the south end of the island.
Two people were found dead on a sandbar near the Back River. Two others were taken to Memorial Health, though there is no word on their condition.
Tybee Fire Chief Fields said the group was overcome by the current. Officials have not said what the group was doing in the water, but eyewitnesses on the scene told WSAV News 3 a cultural festival known as Ganesh Visarjan was taking place earlier Sunday evening.
The base of operations for the search is Chatham Avenue and Venetian Drive.
