Highway 1 At Edisto Road Reopen After Early Morning Fatal Crash

Aiken County, South Carolina – Traffic is moving again on Highway 1 in Aiken County on Friday afternoon. Highway 1 at Edisto Road was shut for several hours Friday morning following a tragic accident.

Just before 7 a.m. Aiken County deputies arrived at Edisto Road and Highway 1, also known as Columbia Highway. Deputies found the lifeless body of 16-year-old Skylar Pennington. Authorities say the teen was crossing Highway 1 at Edisto Road to catch the school bus when she was hit by a Jeep.

Authorities tell News Channel 6 the Jeep driven by Mary Starnes from Graniteville, South Carolina. Skylar Pennington was pronounced dead at the scene by the Aiken County Coroner shortly after 7 a.m.

An autopsy on the victim is scheduled to be performed Saturday morning in Newberry, South Carolina. Currently, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
