Aiken County, SC – Washed over roads forced officials to evacuate homes in Aiken County on Sunday.

Aiken County Emergency Management Coordinator Paul Matthews urged residents to leave their homes, earlier in the day, along a stretch of Old Shoals Road. The water has now receded enough that residents are starting to return home at their own risk. The Red Cross was called in to get Mount Pleasant Baptist Church ready to receive families who may need a place to sleep and shower overnight.

“Currently, there are no residents there, so I’m not sure how much longer the shelter will be open…it was opened because we were worried about a spillway giving way and we wanted to make sure that we had a place for those residents to go to,” said Matthews.

You can call 211 from anywhere within Aiken County to receive up-to-date information about evacuations, washed-out roads, as well as help finding shelter if you need it.
