Family and friends of the El Faro cargo ship crew are reacting to the Coast Guard’s announcement that the ship likely sank somewhere near the Bahamas.
Rescue crews have been searching since last Thursday. The El Faro, carrying Savannah native Shawun Thomas, was in route to Puerto Rico when a mechanical failure left it adrift and in the path of Hurricane Joaquin.
At its peak, Joaquin was packing winds in excess of 140-miles-per-hour and producing 50-foot waves…most likely too much for the stranded vessel to handle.
The brother of crew member Steven Shultz remembers him as a dedicated family man.
Two mariners are hoping for the best, as they wait for the news about their friend, Keith Griffin, missing in the Atlantic.
Griffin is an engineer on the cargo ship “El Faro.”
