AUGUSTA, Ga.- Meatloaf is the quintessential family meal, beloved by American families for generations. This week, I’m changing it up a bit with an Italian-inspired version. My Italian Meatloaf Mozzarella is just as easy to put together as a regular meatloaf, but it’s packed with flavor from sage-flavored sausage, marinara sauce and Italian seasonings.
Combine some of the marinara with an egg, some breadcrumbs, Italian seasonings and garlic salt. Now, crumble some lean ground beef and sage flavored bulk sausage over the top.
The mozzarella appears in the meatloaf two ways. First, I’ll add it to the meat mixture before shaping and baking. Second, the meatloaf is topped with a bit more marinara and sprinkled with some cheese. Then, it goes back into the oven so the cheese topping melts.
I’ll finish of this meatloaf that just came out of the oven. Spread the marinara over the top, sprinkle with the cheese and return to the oven for 10 minutes more.
The meatloaf can be the centerpiece of an Italian-inspired meal, with a side of pasta and a steamed green vegetable. If you’re a meatloaf sandwich lover, this one is best served hot-topping each slice with more marinara and mozzarella and serving on hoagie rolls. The meatloaf can be frozen before or after baking.
