Aiken, SC – WJBF News Channel 6 has learned that Rick Osbon, who was elected as the new Mayor of Aiken, South Carolina on Tuesday will be sworn in on Monday, November 23rd. The city’s current mayor, Fred Cavanaugh, will be retiring the same day.
Cavanaugh has been Mayor for the last 24 years as Mayor. Osbon’s election makes him the third Mayor that Aiken has had in nearly seven decades. According to the City of Aiken’s website-, “H. Odell Weeks served continuously from 1957 through 1991. Mayor Weeks also served as mayor during two earlier terms, for a total of 40 years. Fred Cavanaugh was first elected to City Council in 1985. He then succeeded Mayor Weeks in 1991 and has been re-elected every four years for the past six terms.”
“Cavanaugh is the only Mayor that many Aikenites have ever known,” according to the post on the City of Aiken’s website. He “will preside over the opening of his last City Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 23. After gaveling the meeting to order, Mayor Fred Cavanaugh will call for approval of the minutes of the Nov. 9 meeting and then introduce City Clerk Sara Ridout for the purpose of swearing in Aiken’s next mayor.”
Osbon is a graduate of Aiken High School and the University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA). He owns Osbon’s Laundry & Cleaners http://www.osboncleaners.org/. He is married to Angie Mathis Osbon http://www.pacersports.com/information/directory/bios/Osbon_Angie, who is a graduate of South Aiken High School and USCA. She works for USCA as Assistant Athletic Director/Business & Student-Athlete Services/Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). The couple has 3 children, Reagan, Gemma, and Sterling.
