Your Hometown Stories: Divante Jones

AUGUSTA, Ga.- This is Divante Jones, a 23 year old boxer from Augusta. He might not be a household name yet, but he soon will be.

Jones is a lightweight who has a professional record of 5-0 with 4 knockouts. Divante has been boxing since the age of 8 after an altercation at school lead him to the ring.

“One day I got into a fight on the bus with this guy that was messing with me and I hit him in the nose. I got off the bus and my father asked me what happened because I had blood on my shirt. He told me about boxing and told me that once I got started I couldn’t give up and since then it’s been a roller coaster ride”

Jones comes from a family of boxers from his father to his great granddad. Divante puts in many hours of training. It starts with early morning runs, watching tape, hitting the gym, then back home to study tape again, over and over, day in and day out.

“Well, my father said that extraordinary people do extraordinary things. So if you want to be the best at this sport you have to do more than others are not willing to do in order to be the best”

His father, Albert Jones, is his trainer and knew that boxing would teach him about discipline and being a man. Since boxing at the age of 8 years old, Divante missed out on parties, hanging with his friends, but also stayed out of trouble.

“People that I grew up with 10-15 years, they see the result of my training and hard work and they tell me I’m glad you stuck with it”

Jones has many achievements, including being a 6 time golden gloves champion, 2 times US men’s champion, and numerous belts and trophies. Divante has a great love for the sport of boxing and continues to work hard to become a world champion.
