Aiken, SC (WJBF) — The Lady Pacers’ win Wednesday night meant more than a just a home opening win for USC Aiken coach Mike Brandt, who earned his 500th career victory as a college head coach.
“You know, it’s nice,” Brandt said. “500 wins — that’s a lot of wins when you look at it. I think in the coaching ranks you have to have a very supportive family, and my family’s been extremely supportive. The credit goes to the players. I think I’ve probably had between two, three-hundred of them. I don’t know how many it is but this is 500 victories — each of them have a little piece of that.”
The Lady Pacers trailed Wingate by 10 points at halftime but junior wing Alexis Ware led a USC come back with a team-high 18 points. A couple late three-pointers sealed the 62-56 win and head coach Mike Brandt’s 500th career win as a head coach.
In the second game of the double-header, the USC Aiken men’s team beat Paine College, 97-84, in its home opener. Guard Keith Belfield recorded a team-high 31 points in the Pacers first win of the season.
