Indianapolis, IN (WISH/MEDIA GENERAL) – Former Subway pitchman, Jared Fogle, gave tearful testimony in federal court Thursday in Indianapolis. For the first time, we heard from the man at the center of the child porn scandal.
He started by saying, “Where do I even try to begin? For most of my adult life, I’ve been in the spotlight trying to be a positive role model for others.”
Fogle was breathing very heavily and seemed extremely nervous. He broke down in tears about halfway through, when he was talking about the victims. He did not stop crying for the remainder of his statement.
Fogle says he became dependent on alcohol, porn and prostitutes.
Fogle repeatedly expressed a desire to redeem himself, and said, “I can never change my deplorable past choices.”
Fogle pointed out that his wife has also suffered because of his actions. But, the judge interrupted by quipping, “You gave your wife $7 million though. She’ll be fine.”
Fogle said he did not understand the consequences of his actions.
In the end, Fogle was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison and a lifetime of supervision.
The judge in Jared Fogle’s case said after sentencing, “This defendant was obsessed with child pornography and having sex with minors. He chose to benefit from the production” of child porn, by obtaining the material.”
The judge said Fogle will continue his treatment while in prison, “The defendant appears to be sincere in his request for treatment. Fogle is now painful aware of the harm he caused victims.”
A victim’s mother wrote to the court, saying her 16-year-old daughter has been contemplating suicide and is now on depression medicine.
