(AUGUSTA,GA) Mayor Davis says his office has accomplished a lot this year but one thing it failed to do is operate within its approved budget
“The reality of it is George we asked for those additional resources because we wanted to engage in a conversation about honest budgeting at the beginning of the year we knew well with having the appropriate people on staff where we could be,” said Mayor Davis.
Where the Mayor Office is now is out of money and needs 27 thousand additional dollars to make it through the rest of the year.
“I’m really disappointed and surprised if that’s going to happen I’ve been hearing different things for a long time now here it is crunch time we have to see what actually comes out of this,” said Commissioner Marion Williams.
“I don’t know where we will make up that difference I think that’s going to be some reallocation of funds which I don’t like to hear as taxpayer,” said Commissioner Mary Davis
Two of the biggest overruns for the Mayor’s Office has been the money spent on travel and training and staff salaries that’s troubling for some city leaders.
“Certain salaries and certain positions he could have gotten for a lot less and everything and not worn out his budget right off the bat,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Grady Smith.
The budget shortfall is the latest setback for the mayor’s office
In February he was criticized for calling for more powers for the mayor without discussing it with the commission
In September he was apologizing for plagiarism, and he had to back off a request for a new SUV for the office, but the mayor doesn’t think he has stubbed his toe this year in office.
“We’ve had an opportunity to learn how local government works our experiences were different,” said Davis.
In the 2016 budget, the administrator is recommending a 40-thousand dollar increase for the Mayor’s office.
That will cover the salaries. And Commissioners have already agreed to a ten-thousand dollar travel budget.
I asked the Mayor if that’s enough to avoid going over budget again next year.
He said that puts the office in a stronger position.
