Columbia, SC (WJBF) — In order to earn its sixth state football title, Silver Bluff needed to win a rematch with Abbeville, who beat the Bulldogs 28-6 in the first week of the regular season. But again, the Panthers proved to be too much for the Bulldogs, as Silver Bluff lost the SCHSL 2A, D-II title game, 45-27.
After 23 seasons as its head coach, Silver Bluff’s Al Lown has been around long enough for the highs of championship victories and the lows of title game losses. He was choked up following the game, pridefully talking about his team.
“Our kids played hard,” Lown said. “Boy, they played hard all night, so it means a lot; it means a lot. I’m real proud of these kids, they could’ve quit easily. We got beat by a better team. When you get beat by a better team, there’s not much you can say. They were better in August and they were better in December, so it hurts. Yes, it hurts, but I’m proud of them.”
Allendale-Fairfax also played in a state title at Benedict College in Columbia Saturday. The Tigers played Southside Christian during the afternoon in the SCHSL A, D-I title game. But like Silver Bluff, Allendale-Fairfax struggled to slow down its opponent’s offense as the Tigers fell 42-8 to Southside Christian.
