ATLANTA (AP) – Donald Hammond III rushed for 109 yards and two second-half touchdowns to lead Eagle’s Landing Christian to a 35-14 win over Aquinas in the Georgia High School Association’s Class A Private championship game Saturday at the Georgia Dome.
The senior quarterback scored on runs of 18 and 32 yards as the Chargers (11-3) erased a 14-13 deficit to win the school’s second state championship. He completed 5 of 9 passes for 52 yards.
Eagle’s Landing Christian also scored on a 2-yard run from Tony Gear, who rushed for 99 yards, and field goals of 27 and 48 yards by Alex Usry. Khaleb Hood returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown with 12 seconds left.
Aquinas (13-1) scored on Verenzo Holmes’ 99-yard kickoff return to open the game. The Fightin’ Irish also got a 6-yard touchdown pass from Liam Welch to Justin Gibbs. Welch completed 15 of 29 for 164 yards and one touchdown, with two interceptions.
This was Aquinas second state title game appearance in the last 3 years. They won a state championship in 2013. They lost in the state semifinals last year. This was just the 3rd loss in 41 games for James Leonard as Aquinas head coach.
