Augusta, GA (WJBF) — It’s a last minute rush to get the new Riverwatch Cinemas finished for the biggest movie of 2015.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens in theaters on Thursday and crews and city inspectors spent the better part of Wednesday making sure the state-of-the-art facility is ready to open.
“We plan to put tickets on sale Wednesday evening and then we’ll have tickets for Thursday night and throughout the rest of the weekend. We are planning to play ‘Star Wars’ in our GTX Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow,” general manager Richard Frymoyer said.
Riverwatch Cinemas is different than any other theater in town. It’s truly about luxury. The facility has a branded auditorium called the GTX Experience.
“We have an 82-foot screen. We have full leather electric recliners. They are dual motor, so if you want to sit back or just have your feet up. We have our sound system, which is DOLBY ATMOS. We have 60 speakers in that auditorium. They each play different sounds so it is a very immersive experience. For example, if a helicopter goes over your head in the movie, you’ll actually hear it going through the speakers over your head,” Frymoyer said.
The movie theater is also different because it doesn’t have a box office. Customers will purchase their tickets online or at the concession stand.
“It’s kind of a one stop shop. You buy your tickets there, your concession items, and then you go down the line. All of our drinks are going to be self serve,” Frymoyer said.
Also, something new to the CSRA is a full service bar and restaurant in a movie theater. Management says it won’t be open for “Star Wars”, but will be ready in a few weeks.
“Anything from our kitchen, you’ll be able to purchase at our concession stand, pick up at our host stand, and then go to the movie. So, you can bring any of the food into any of the theaters that you like. Or, if you would like a drink, you can go to the bar, purchase it, and bring it into the auditorium,” Frymoyer said.

A lot of the theaters around town are allowing fans to show up with Star Wars costumes, however, they don’t allow masks or weapon-like props. Lightsabers seem to be okay, as long as they are turned off when you get inside.
Riverwatch Cinemas tickets will be $9.00 for matinee and $12.00 after 6:00 p.m. GTX will cost an extra $4.00 and 3D will be an extra $3.00.
