Barnwell, SC — For two baton-twirling best friends from Barnwell, friendly competition is a happy twist of fate.
Riley Ridgeway, a freshmen and Crimsonette at the University of Alabama, will be on the sidelines at the National College Football Championship — and so will her hometown best friend, Laura Burckhalter, who is a majorette for Clemson.
“It’s indescribable,” said Ridgeway. “We never thought it would happen. We never thought we’d be back together.”
Burckhalter and Ridgeway have been inseparable since the ninth grade, when they were both majorettes at Barnwell High School. Now the two small town girls will both be on the sidelines for the big game — and they still can’t believe it.
“We were texting back and forth right when we got to school about preseason predictions – completely kidding about it,” said Ridgeway.
“After we won, I texted her saying I did what I had to do to make it happen and she had to do what she had to do to make it happen,” said Burckhalter.
For Scottie Moore, their high school coach, seeing her girls back on the sideline together is a dream come true.
“I was pulling for the teams to win so much. This is incredible,’ Moore said.
“I mean it’s just so rare for that to happen.”
These two best friends say they’ll both be happy regardless of which team takes the title.
As for coach? When we asked her which team she was rooting for, she simply said “halftime.”
